TIGTA Announces New Deputy Inspector General For Audit

WASHINGTON, DC – J. Russell George, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, today announced the appointment of Michael McKenney as Deputy Inspector General for Audit.

McKenney, a 22-year veteran of TIGTA and its predecessor agency, the IRS Inspection Service, is currently Acting Deputy Inspector General for Audit.  He leads a diverse team of over 250 auditors, analysts, information technology specialists, and other professionals in 22 offices nationwide.

TIGTA's Office of Audit issues approximately 100 audit reports annually containing recommendations to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to improve tax administration and address management challenges in the areas of employee and data security, computer modernization, tax compliance, tax law implementation, improper payments, human capital, and protection of taxpayers' rights.

"Mike is an experienced executive with a solid track record and proven leadership skills," Inspector General George said, noting that the audits McKenney has led during his tenure here include important reviews of the IRS's efforts to combat identity theft and prisoner tax fraud, among others.  "Going forward," Inspector General George added, "Mike's extensive knowledge will serve TIGTA well as we monitor IRS programs and operations at a time of increasingly complex challenges for Federal tax administration."

Prior to becoming Acting Deputy Inspector General in 2012, McKenney served as Assistant Inspector General for Audit (Returns Processing and Account Services) with responsibility for providing audit oversight of IRS operations related to the preparation and processing of tax returns and the issuing of refunds to taxpayers.

From 2002 to 2006, McKenney served as an audit director in TIGTA's Headquarters Operations and Exempt Organizations Programs Business Unit.  Earlier in his career, McKenney served as manager of TIGTA's Denver Field Office.  He began his Federal auditing career in 1992 with the IRS Inspection Service in Los Angeles.

A California native, McKenney is a graduate of California State University, Fullerton with a B.A. in Business (Accounting). He lives in Maryland.
