U.S. Census Bureau Releases "Pop Quiz" Mobile App

Today, the U.S. Census Bureau released Census PoP Quiz, which is a new interactive mobile application that challenges users' knowledge of demographic facts for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The new app, which draws from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS), aims to raise statistical literacy about the U.S. population.

"Census PoP Quiz provides an introduction to the statistics that define our growing, changing nation and is just one example of how the Census Bureau is making our rich data more accessible than ever before," Census Bureau Director John H. Thompson said. "It's a great way for everyone to learn facts about all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the nation in a fun, relevant way."

The app is free and available for both iPhone and Android smartphones and tablets. Features include:

  • Challenges that test knowledge of topics such as population, housing and commuting.
  • Questions that span locations in all 50 states and the nation's capital.
  • Badges to share with contacts via social media connections.

The mobile initiative is one example of how the Census Bureau is working to make America's statistics available anywhere, anytime to everyone and on any device — consistent with the Department of Commerce's open data priorities and the federal government's Digital Government Strategy.

The ACS provides reliable statistics that are indispensable to anyone who has to make informed decisions about the future. These statistics are required by all levels of government to manage or evaluate a wide range of programs, but are also useful for research, education, journalism, business and advocacy.
